Aranya Mirror of the Sea Garden is situated on the frontline seaside plot of Phase VII of Aranya Beidaihe. As a community landscape, its design breaks through the conventional enclosure walls of residential compounds, endowing the space with multiple attributes—private use, neighborhood sharing, and public openness. It is not only a seaside dwelling but also a life oriented toward the sea, striking a balance between a sense of belonging and inclusiveness. The design draws inspiration from the immense emptiness of the northern coast. Taking the intuitive perception of the site upon first arrival as the creative starting point, Z’scape translate the acoustic rhythm of “mountain and sea playing in harmony” into a convergence of nature and cultural memory. Together with coastal natural elements and their dynamic processes—clouds, wind, sand, and waves—this is reinterpreted into a minimalist yet playful landscape language that brings delight and surprise. The project transforms the original site, once a cluttered hard-surfaced parking lot, into an accessible, experiential place with a distinct identity, using artistic landscape to connect the Aranya community with coastal life. In response to environmental challenges such as severe winter cold and strong winds in the north, the design adheres to the principle of “restrained abundance,” proposing context-specific solutions that contain richness within moderation. This approach achieves an organic integration of everyday living with the northern coastal region.
